Graduate Research STUDENT Internships

The ORNL Graduate Research Student Internship (GRSI) program provides research opportunities that complement academic programs by utilizing the unique resources and mentorship provided by world-class scientists and engineers to enhance STEM education, encourage careers in science and technology, and improve scientific literacy.

Spring 2024 applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until October 23rd, 2023 at 11:59 PM EST OR until available spaces are filled.

Commitment & Duration

  • Summer: full-time 10-12 weeks
  • Fall/spring: full-time or part-time 16-20 weeks

Part-time option only applies to students who are enrolled full-time in college.

Eligibility 

  • U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) at the time of application
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s or doctoral degree-seeking program at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university at the time of applying
  • 18+ years old at the start of the internship
  • Minimum graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Participants are required to have coverage under a health insurance plan and must provide proof of such coverage 
Benefits 
  • Stipend of $950 per week (paid bi-weekly)
  • Housing allowance of $250 per week (paid bi-weekly)
  • Eligible participants whose permanent address is more than 50 miles from ORNL will receive a travel reimbursement of up to $1,000 for round-trip domestic travel to and from ORNL
