The Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program (SCGSR) at ORNL gives the opportunity for graduate students to leverage the world-class facilities and expertise of the staff at ORNL to pursue their thesis research.

ORNL participates in the Department of Energy Science Graduate Student Research Program

This program provided by the DOE supports graduate students in advancing their graduate research while building lasting collaborations at ORNL. This program allows Ph.D. students the opportunity to identify an ORNL staff member to develop a collaborative research proposal to execute during their time at ORNL. The SCGSR program can range from 3–12 months with variable dates.

2024 Solicitation 1 proposals due May 2024.


• Applications are solicited biannually.
• Starting dates and experience length varies.

Eligibility Overview

• U.S. citizen/LPR
• Enrolled in a qualified graduate program
• Obtained Ph.D. candidacy
• Established a collaboration with an ORNL scientist


Pay and Allowances

  • Existing graduate benefits from academic institution PLUS:
    • A monthly stipend up to $3,600 for while at ORNL (stipend varies)
    • Travel reimbursement up to $2,000 if the home institution is farther than 50 miles from Oak Ridge

Applicants must identify an ORNL mentor.

Together, the applicant and mentor develop a research proposal prior to receipt of SCGSR.
