Department of Energy visiting Faculty Program (VFP)
The Visiting Faculty Program through Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with ORNL seeks to increase the research competitiveness of faculty members and their students at institutions historically underrepresented in the research community.

ORNL participates in the Department of Energy Science Vising Faculty Program
This program gives the faculty member the opportunity to co-write a research proposal with a scientific or engineering staff member at ORNL. Selected faculty engage in 10-week summer research projects under the guidance of laboratory staff. Faculty can also propose to bring a team of two eligible students in the summer term only.
Note
Applicant cannot be a faculty member at a Doctoral-Granting University assessed as being either Research Universities (RU/VH) – very high research activity, or Research Universities (RU/H) – high research activity as determined in the 2010 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education™

Eligibility Overview
- U.S. citizen / LPR
- Full-time faculty member who is:
- at an accredited U.S. degree-granting, postsecondary, institution historically underrepresented in the U.S. research community
- in an area of physics, chemistry, biology (non-medical), mathematics, engineering, environmental sciences, materials sciences, or computer or computational sciences
- at any institution also listed as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU)
Pay and Allowances
- $16,000 stipend for 10-week period
- Housing allowance for the 10-week appointment, if eligible
- In/outbound travel reimbursement up to $500 if permanent address is farther than 50 miles from Oak Ridge
